Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #2) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
So diving back into the recommended by my son set find me reading another in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This one is equally as funny as the first with the same cast of characters and middle school antics.

What I like about these books is that all the “urban legends” from that age are there. Sure – it is ALL of them . It is like you took all the things that happened in school to you and your siblings and put them all in one book. Nice.

These are super fast reads, but I keep laughing out loud at them. The art is still fun. Sure, basic lines and blocks, but it is supposed to be drawn by our hero Greg.

Good stuff. There are two more in the series, with book 5 slated for later this year. I bet they bring it out at the same time as the DVD release of the movie.

Book Review: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

The Anubis Gates The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Here is a book that I should really like. Almost no reason I should not. I mean it was almost tailored for my likes. Egypt – good. Time travel treated as fantasy verses science – I am down with that. Historical fiction and characters used fictitiously – another one for the win column. And it has won a couple awards.

And you know what – I found the book almost unreadable. This book took me forever to get through. The very frustrating part that kept me going was the list above and me constantly saying to myself “But I have to like this!” .

The book started great. Out of the gates, first night, eighty pages consumed. I thought to myself “Great – 4 or 5 more nights and this will be done. What a fun ride”. Then the train came off the tracks. The momentum was weird, the characters started all being grey. I never thought the bad guy was bad, I never thought the good guy a hero, or even really the good guy, just the guy we read about. I mean, I guess in reality everyone has shades of both good and evil. Of course, this is a fantastical, magic infused, time-travel book. I want a hero and a bad guy. The chapters’ pacing was rough and I constantly was flicking head looking for how many more pages. I finally got to the end when I was frustrated enough with the book and wanted it done. I sat down and barreled through it. And truthfully, the book found the first few chapters again and the ending was delightful, slightly surprising and worked. Too bad the middle 2/3 of the book was full of such “rough seas”.

Book Review: Something Missing by Matthew Dicks

Something Missing Something Missing by Matthew Dicks

A fun book that is enjoyable but could be tightened up.

I had been looking at this book for a little while and decided to jump in and read it. Martin is a professional burglar. He has been meticulously inventorying and robbing people for years. Some homes he has been visiting for years and years. He takes small items, a roll of toilet paper, some mustard, 3 cans of soda. He has his favorite brands and products and knows where to get them.

The book as a whole has some very good parts and some parts I feel like are tacked on. The best part is Martin himself. The idea of an OCD burglar who is also a meticulous genius is a clever character. He constantly is amusing.

The plot could have been stronger. I think the book finishes well but does not really find its pace until about half way through. I feel like the book could have been shorter and really sizzled.

I also feel like there were some plot holes from the first half that were left open. What happen to the parrot?! I almost put it down in the first 100 pages. The writing was fine and care given to details were nice. I liked the break down of the methods that Martin used. They just became boorish after awhile.

Matthew Dicks

I still liked it. It was enjoyable. It could have been more refined in my opinion. Would be a really good book for a book club since there are all sorts of stuff to talk about and cling to. It actually read more like a movie than a book if that makes any sense.

Book Review: Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #1) Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My eleven year old read this book last year and has been asking me to read it ever since. I am one to encourage him to read as much as possible so if it is coming back down the pike, I better live by example.

One Sunday morning, I sat down and read through this book. My son has read all four of the books in the series so far. He can relate to the main character in many ways including the crazy playground rules, the big kids, the little kids and being somewhere in the middle.

I remember those days and this book touches on them all. Yes, it is run through the “ridiculous machine” but the age the main character is IS an age of ridiculous. All the things that you see as important day to day are here and written at the volume of a middle schooler.

The book was fun. I had a few laugh out loud moments. The art is crude but in a way meant to be like a child. I already have the second book in hand, Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules.

I had set myself up to read this with expectations set firmly low. The book had so much hype that I did not want to be cynical, but I did want to be realistic. It was a good page turner that I felt ended about sixty pages before the book did.
