Doing my civic duty
As you read this, I am upholding my duty as a member of the community and a tax paying citizen; I am at Jury Duty. This will be my first time actually being there, though I have been called 2 times prior. The first time I was a college student and in Delaware, that gets you out of jury duty. The second time I had just moved to PA and declared residency in PA and Delaware sent a summons. Not being a resident of the state any more got me out. I will recount, I am sure, with great fondness my day of being a part of a jury of peers. Or not if I get home for my anti-religion, anti-gun, anti-anyone-who-is-not-Irish, pro-firearms stance. Or if they will buy that.
In the mean time, you can read Jason’s very humorous recounting of a day of jury duty.
UPDATE: Guess what – no jury duty. There is a hot line and there was not enough jury trials today so I did not have to attend. I am back in the pool, but not the normal long return time, most likely in the next year. I am “recalled” if that happens.
Reviews…reviews…reviews
I have a bunch of reviews to post and will have one out every day starting on Tuesday Feb 5. I believe it will be 2 weeks straight, 10 business days because you know the internet takes weekends and major holidays off (Presidents’ day is around the corner!)
On that note, I am reading a non-fiction book right now called Thunderstruck (insert AC/DC song here). Looking forward to breaking out of the mold of stuff I have been reading as of late.
Super Bowl
Don’t know, don’t care, didn’t watch it.

Saturday was this years pine wood derby at the Cub Scouts, and our first year competing. Honestly, I was a tad bit nervous about it, as I wanted Lyric to do well and have a cool car. Some of these parents are crazy about pine wood derby cars with dry lubricants, and special paint to reduce drag. WHOA – I just wanted Lyric to win one heat.
I arrived with his car in hand and meet him there for the weigh in. The car came in at 4.71oz, under by .29 from the 5oz limit. Not bad. The design of the car, which was totally Lyric’s brain child, was like an old time open wheel racer. You can really tell it is his car and not a “father” car. Some of the cars were obviously not the child’s designs, paint schemes, or otherwise.

Here is Lyric’s car in the starting gates, his is the red one on the left. (btw the kid in the background just lost)
Lyric overall did very well, better than I expected. He did win one heat, and won it by a good 12 inches over the next car. He was very excited about that. At the end of the day we finished either 16th or 17th depending on how the points were calculated. There were 33 racers so we finished right at the half-way point. Not bad for a first-timer. He had a good time as long as he was competing but after he was eliminated, it was slow until the final 3 racers, in which case it got quite exciting.

I have my doubts about the finals though. The 2 finalists were brothers. Ok, I mean I guess dad there has more experience with 2 kids in. BUT he also happens to be the Scout Master. HMMMMMM.
Lyric had a good time and he was happy with his car. Some of the other kids had some great vehicles as well and it was neat to see who was there for a good time and who was there to win.

Today we went fishing. That’s right, I went fishing with my son and fiancee. It was excellent!. We had the great luck of going to Center Point Pond, near home. it is a small place that specializes in water gardens and landscaping that also has a small pond stocked with fish right out back. No need to bring anything but yourself.
We showed up with Catherine being the angler of the group and asked fo the tutorial. The guy helping us was as nice and patient as possible. He helped us manage the worms and lines and explained their catch and release rules. After some time we had some nibbles but no catches. The guy (never got his name) offered us a frozen hot dog! This was the ticket. We were Pro Fisherman like that. I caught 3 catfish, Lyric 2 sunnys and Catherine, the angler, snagged a mighty big bass. This thing was about 18″ to 20″ long and a fighter. Too bad we couldn’t keep it.

Check out the pictures of todays activity. We had a super time and my son had an absolute blast!

I am not a sports fan but I recognize greatness. This is a triumph of the human spirit. Is this his greatest achievement? I would say nope. That would be beating cancer and knowing that the pain that he suffers through in the mountain climbs lets you know how good it is to be alive. I still think his greatest achievement is yet to come. I hope he can use his celebrity to bring a bigger face to cancer and the survivors’ story.
Congratulations Lance.
