We Hide our First Cache!

We have been geocaching since January 1, when we went out and snagged our first find. Since then, we have found 80 more. We are shooting for over 200 by years end.

Today, we went in whole hog and hid our first cache. The cache was name GARFIELD! after Jon yelling at the cat. Reason? The cache is hidden in Garfield Park, which is on Garfield Ave.

It was hidden and published today. Two people have found it as of this post. They went out at night with flash lights to get the first time find on it. Very cool.

We already have another one ready to go. Brian hooked us up with a ammo can and supplies to do a full on “big cache”. I think we may try putting a disposable camera in that one. Who knows.

UPDATE

Cache has been removed. The park we placed it in is a small park surrounded by homes. One cacher had the cops called on him! Too many think this is their back yard! Lesson learned.

Tweeting my Geocaches

You may have noticed the area to the right on the homepage labeled “Updates from the Interwebs”. This pulls in all sorts of stuff from all over. It has my updates from goodreads, my Pandora and Last.fm updates and my Twitter feed. The biggest reason for my twitter account is geocaching.  I use it for getting free software and charity “retweets” too. But really – it is for geocaching.

The geocaching site will let you tie your geocaching updates to a twitter account. This allows them to pop up right away when I find (or do not find one!). Pretty cool little function if you ask me. It is not a big deal but I dig it.

We have been ripping up the caches lately, hitting number 70 today.

I also had my first First Time Find. Basically comes down to being the first person to find a cache and sign the log.

Very tricky to do, geocachers are a slightly competitive bunch!

I also found my first nano cache. These are teeny tiny. Check out that photo!

Really well hidden.

We also have had our first geocache “casualty”; Lyric is rocking some poison ivy right now.

Nice Weather – Let’s Geocache!!

Been some time since I have done any geocaching because of the snow. Since things have melted, I decided today was a great day to grab a cache. (just realized I never posted about our whole day of caching) On the way home I stopped at a park that I had no idea was there. It is a equestrian park in the middle of a well to do area. You would never know you were in the middle of suburbia.

Found the cache pretty easily. Had to do a little creek jumping to get there, but all in the fun of the hunt. The view from the top of the small hill while the sun was setting was awesome.

Only problem was that the cache was in need of serious maintenance. A lot of water has gotten into the container and everything was unusable. Log was ruined, “treasures” were water logged junk now. Too bad. Hopefully the cache hider will come and improve it. I left him a note that it was in need of some TLC.

Geocaching while commuting

So going home and coming to work happen to take me past some geocaches.  What to do?  Well, you stop! All of them are very quick grabs and all of them are very public.  The last of the three also turned out to be a sort of mini-multicache.

I stopped on the way home at one of several train stations and grabbed one. Had to try and time it just right with people getting off trains coming home.  I hope I was successful. There were lots of people around.

This morning I decided because of traffic to go a slightly different way and at a red light thought, “I wonder if there are any geocaches around here?”.  Well, there were four.  But because of my drive and traffic, I only snagged two.

The first was neat and very quick.  Nice name and location. And it could not have been more public!  Had to wait for a mom and daughter to go into the grocery store to snag it.

Right around the corner was another one. This was a cool one that someone had some fun with.  Three caches linked together with clues.  Very nifty.

I also snagged some more on the way home. Both of them in the same shopping center. There are a total of 4 in this one center but it was getting too dark to find the other two. These were both set up around the Preston and Steve Camp Out for Hunger.
