So like a month ago I finished this. I suck at getting these reviews up. I have 2 more to do before the book I am currently reading. Gotta love it.
The book is another great collection of Sedaris and his “life”
Welcome to the weird mind of David Sedaris. Some people find his offbeat humor, well off-putting. He can be slightly cruel, but always saves the means digs for himself.
This is his first in his series of memoir style works, followed by Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim . I had read Me Talk Pretty prior and really enjoyed it, so I decided to break things up by reading this between fiction works.
This books focuses more on his childhood and his family growing up, at least the first half. To hear him describe his ticks and squeals is both funny and heartbreaking to picture someone going through these things but getting the internal monologue that turns it into a competition to see how long he can withhold licking a light switch.
His family is absolutely out of control and is a blast to read about! My favorite has to be the short titled “Dinah, the Christmas Whore”. The title ALONE gets the prize but the adventure of David going with his sister after she gets a frantic phone call from a coworker is unreal. I hope it is a real story - because it is so freaking out there.
It is a very funny read and very enjoyable. It can easily be picked up and put down because of it being a series of essays.
I think overall I liked Me Talk Pretty One Day better as a whole work. That is because the second half of the book is a linear series of essays about his time in Paris (thus the title). But I think Naked had stronger individual essays.
Either way - great stuff.
