Amazon does….groceries?

I came across this in my Amazon wanderings and the idea struck me. Amazon is doing groceries now? Wasn’t that the poster child of the dot-com bust?

They have taken a slightly different approach. It is only dry, nonperishable items. Think dry cereal, teas & coffee, dry mixes, etc. That way shipping and storage are much less of an issue.

The other thing to help both the consumer and Amazon is that they are selling things more like a warehouse store or bulk-buy kinda thing. Most items come in 3 or 6 pack quantities.

I have poked around some and not knowing a “good price” for many groceries I cannot tell if their prices are truly competitive. I can price coffee though. And I looked through their organic/fair trade whole bean coffee (yes – I am a coffee geek). Guess what — buying it from Amazon is pretty good!. Their organic coffees all come in 3 packs of 10 to 12 oz bags (just like the grocery store) and with the discount (and free shipping… Amazon Prime works here) it comes to about $6 -$7 a pound. For organic/fair-trade that is pretty good!

I will have to sit down with Catherine and see if price wise it would be worth buying some items from there (ooooo look… Natural danruff shampoo!).
