Playing the Funk with Erik Mitchell

OK, so it only took me 4 days after the gig to write this.

On Saturday (3/25) I played out again. I was fortunate enough to be able to get to play with Erik Mitchell at the completely poorly marked Connie’s Cafe in Jersey.

We played through a selection of tunes from Erik’s album All These Words (buy it now). He asked me about playing the show back in the beginning of February but because of getting married I was not able to rehearse with him until 4 days before the show. I then ran through the material over the next couple days and we did a quick run through at his place before the show.

Erik played 2 sets on his own and then I joined him for the third. It went well, thought there were some rough points. Kinda hard to hide them when there is only the two of us. The surprise of the set came from Erik and I covering an old tune from my former band Tempus Fugit. We played through the verses and Erik sang the chorus of Flagger’s Lament.

I am really glad a played and it was very nice of Erik to invite me along. I think we are gonna try and do it again. Mike took some pictures and top notch video of the Flagger’s performance ;)

    Much better…now I can leave a comment!

I’m very glad you got to perform again Dave, even if it seems like you had to throw rehersal together via triage. I’m sure it was a good night, even though you’re tough on yourself for the “rough parts”.

I think it’s very cool that you even got to do some of your own stuff in there too. Not that I’m pestering you in any way, because I know you’ve been busy at work lately, and I’m sensitive of people’s time in general, but were you ever able to dig up any of the recordings from the past? You had mentioned giving it a go, and letting me see what the tunes were like.

I understand if you think it may be in a box, that’s currently at the back of a closet, huddled beneath a mountain of junk that would make Sir Hillary dubious. I was just curious.

And, as always, keep the funk alive…

Actually Brian did find the Tempus Fugit concert. I am getting Chris (the audio engineer) to digitize it for me. After that, I can distribute to my hearts content. I will put you on the list. Of course, it will be the hottest thing out there so you may just be able to download a copy ;)

Don’t forget, I have Fighting Elvis: Live from the House of Fire and Sharp Things too!

Gonna have to release it as a double album.

Cool! I’m on a waiting list.

Now, even though the weather may be turning a bit sour this week, I’ll still be on the sunny side of life…
