Movie Review: The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

We went about a week ago to view this cinematic escape and enjoyed ourselves to no end.

I had recently read the book and I am glad that I did.

They stuck tightly to the main plot line of the book (which is good) and made some expansions of parts. The beginning is enhanced to show the battle scenes of World War II and I thought well done and “book ended” the movie very well. The children playing the parts of Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter were all very good and they all contributed excellent performances. My favorite performance falls to Tilda Swinton as the White Witch. First off, a great character and secondly a equally great performance.

The plot had some other additions such as the expansion of the relationship between Mr Tumnus and Lucy, and of course the battle at the end. Both of these were well done and implied in the book.

I really enjoyed this and if the continue to produce them in the order written we should be up for Prince Caspian which does follow the kids again. It should be released just in time for the holiday film season 2007.

While I agree that Tilda Swinton’s performance was excellent, I must say that I was a bit underwhelmed with the film as a whole. Among other things, the music was terrible, and that honestly took away from my enjoyment. The kids were fine, but there was just something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on.

I do not think the music was terrible, but they did not go with a big traditional orchestral score.

Have you read the book recently? And comparing to say Lord of The Rings , though valid in some form, is not in others. While LOTR is gritty, Narnia is “fairy tale”, LOTR Dark, Narnia is light.

Was the film perfect - no. Was I satisfied - yes, especially considering that this is the first live action film the director has done - with the 2 Shrek films under his belt.

I have yet to see the movie, but when I heard that Tilda Swinton was choosen to play the Witch, it seemed like a perfect match.
