Book Review: Behold the Man by Michael Moorcock
Behold the ManBy Michael Moorcock
I had no idea of the quality of read I was in for Sunday evening when I say down to read this novella . Clocking in a mere 100 pages - and that is a genrous count considering the type face - it moved and twisted in the way of a full fledged novel.
The plot involved a man who travels back in time to witness the life of Jesus. Only he ends up assuming the identity and fulfilling the role and plot. The characterizations of Jeses, John the Baptist, Mary and Joesph are shocking. I think that was part of it’s appeal.
Overall, an EXCELLENT read. I like the challenges to religion and he compliments and insults religion all in one fowl swoop. This was the 30th anniversary addition (1996 - hardback). If you get a chance to read it make sure you read the afterward. It gives you a great insight into the author and how he dealt with reaction to it.
